The Story Behind OtherFamily
Over the years, I have been blessed enough to have encountered some of the best people, from some of the broadest walks of life. As time has progressed, we have learned about and from one another, we have grown and expanded, we have become something more than just an ordinary group of friends - we have become a family.
Perhaps it would be best if I were to give you a little bit more info about us, so that you are better able to understand the people that you will be dealing with on a regular basis if you frequent this page. The way that OtherFamily initially formed was many years ago. There were two seperate groups at this time, each one solidified in and of itself, and each containing its various stragglers that would dwell on the fringes of the respective niche they belonged to. On one side, you had Hess, Edge, Payco, and Nel Dawg. They were the core of their posse, if I may be so bold as to say so, with their various stragglers of Swift, Reeder, RJ, etc, etc. I could sit here and rattle off names til I'm blue in the face, but that wouldn't get you the real story. On the other side we had myself, Mort, Randizzle, DWeaz, and many more as well.
Now, you might be asking yourself, what exactly could be the force that would draw these two posses together? What phenomenon could bring about this great merger? An organization, based on a small campus in Wisconsin, known as the Platteville Gaming Association (PGA). The PGA was a group of college students who had a love for gaming in all its forms, RPG, board games, PC, cards, video - it simply made no difference. I, and a few of my friends joined this, only to meet Hess. This was the begining of what would become a legend of a year, known now as the "D-X Summer."
Edge, Hess, and Payco decided to rent a house in the town we all lived in. The house, which gave life to the legend itself, was to be known as the D-X House. I suppose it is almost inaccurate to say that it was just them living there, as myself, Randizzle, and Mort were almost always there - the same holds true for many others as well. We were a motley crew, but we were able to co-exist. This period of time broke us, but it also remade us into something more than we had ever anticipated. We now had so many numbers, so many walks of life, so many perspectives, and so much turmoil amongst the pack. Famous skirmishes include: Alex vs. Hess, Alex vs. Zeb, Edge vs. Payco, Edge vs. Alex & Mort (the suspicion game, remeber that one). There are many more too. This is the time that we also developed our own fight club, something that probably saved more of us than we can ever give credit for!
As time continued to drift away from us, things began to change. The group was shifting, members were now starting to disperse, and contact started to become an issue. That's when Hess and I went into planning mode. What exactly could we do, in this day and age, that would allow our group to be able to stay in contact with one another. Many ideas crossed through our twisted minds, but the one that we fancied the most was the idea of a website. Not only could we allow the group to stay in contact with a website, but we could also push the envelope to a level that we really couldn't in any other medium. OtherFamily.net had been conceived.
To start things off, Hess and I got a simple communication form up. We cracked out a php-based forum board and started getting the crew signed up. Over time, we have continued working on that forum, taking it to levels that are much more appropriate for our little gang (that, and Hess and I are perfectionists). To add to the content, within a few months we had an image gallery up and running to complement the forum. Now, we are to a spot where we are left to look onward to the future.
So, you might ask yourself, where else could this page possibly go? Well, that is a question that even we do not possess the anwser of. As the webmasters of this domain, we find ourselves to be nothing more than humble servants to a greater cause. We find ourselves open to the concept of advancement. Though, I can say that there are at least a few things that will certainly be making an appearance:
- A vast role-playing section, that will be multifunctional
- A live chat module, pushing communication further than just a forum
- Small companies sites, and potentially band sites
These are just to name a few of the many planned features to be coming in the future, but for now we will perfect that which we have already created.
